New $1.3 million NIDA Grant at the TSET Health Promotion Research Center Aims to Help Information Regulation of Menthol Cigarettes (May 2020)
Menthol cigarette smoking has increased significantly among young adults, compared to any other age group, and it is linked to smoking initiation and progression. The Food and Drug Administration has announced its intention to reduce the nicotine content in cigarettes to mini=mally addictive levels, in an effort to reduce smoking and increase cessation. Notably, a reduced nicotine standard would apply to menthol cigarettes, which comprise 30% of the cigarette market share. This 3-year R01 grant will examine the impact of a reduced nicotine standard in a policy scenario where menthol cigarettes are banned.
